Vernon

Hillside in fall at Wallkill River National Wildlife RefugeVernon Township, located on 70 square miles in the northeast corner of Sussex County, is home to approximately 25,000 people. It is bordered by Wantage to the west, Hardyston to the south and West Milford to the east. It's northern border is the State of New York.

Much of Vernon is preserved open space criss-crossed by both federal and state parks and a 20-mile stretch of the Appalacian Trail. Communities within the township include Glenwood, Highland Lakes, McAfee, Vernon Valley, Barry Lakes and Lake Wallkill. Vernon is also home to many lake communities, including Highland Lakes, Barry Lakes, Cliffwood Lake, High Breeze, Lake Conway, Lake Wanda, Laurel Lake, Lake Wildwood, Lake Glenwood, Lake Panorama, Lake Pochung, Lake Wallkill, Pleasant Valley Lake, Scenic Lakes, and Vernon Valley Lake.

Vernon is a year round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, including skiers and snowboarders during the winter, and hikers, golfers, mountain bikers, kayakers, campers, and picnickers in the spring through fall. 

The major attractions at Vernon include Mountain Creek Ski Resort, Mountain Creek Waterpark, Crystal Springs Golf Resort and Spa, Wawayanda State Park, and Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge.

The Vernon Township School District serves students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade and consists of three primary schools, two middle schools and a high school.
