Jefferson

Jefferson Township, nestled in the northwest corner of Morris County, is a countryside town with approximately 21,000 residents on 43 square miles less than an hour from New York City. Known as the “Year Round Recreational Capital” Jefferson always has an outdoor activity going on.

The township has two large developed sections, Milton/Oak Ridge and Lake Hopatcong. Each has its own first aid squad, fire department substation and set of elementary schools.

Communities within its borders include: Berkshire Valley, Berkshire Ridge, Dawns Mist, Colonial Oaks, Cozy Lake, East Shores, Halsey Island, Lake Forest, Lake Hopatcong, Lake Shawnee, Lake Swannanoa, Lake Winona, Longwood Lake, Lower Longwood, Moosepac Pond, Newfoundland, Nolans Point, Milton/Oak Ridge, Pond Hollow, Prospect Point, Raccoon Island, The Fairways, The Peaks, Waters Edge, White Rock, Woodport and Woodstock.

All of these communities enjoy resources ranging from fishing and swimming to water skiing and boat racing. and a vast population of wildlife. 

Included in Jefferson Township is the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, the largest park in Morris County Park System, encompassing 3,200 acres of near wilderness and recreational areas, with over 20 miles of multi-use trails. One of the Reservations outstanding features is Headley Overlook, one of the highest points in the Morris County Park System. Jefferson Township also contains the most shoreline of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey’s largest freshwater lake.

The Jefferson Township Public Schools serve students in kindergarten through twelfth grade in its seven schools.
